Virginia "Ginny" Bernales, 91, of Lakeside Park, KY, a devoted and beloved member of her family and community, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, at her daughter's residence in Edgewood, Kentucky. She was born on March 5, 1934 in Manila, Philippines as a US citizen to Jesse and Agustina Light, and emigrated to the US in 1956. Ginny lived a life filled with warmth, faith, and dedication. Words cannot begin to describe her pure and loving heart. She was affectionately called "Honey" by her grandchildren and many others.
Ginny retired as a secretary at the Fernald Nuclear Plant, where she made lasting connections and contributed meaningfully to her workplace for many years. Her professional life was only a small part of a rich tapestry woven with devotion and service. A devout Catholic, she was particularly devoted to Mary and was well known for hosting prayer meetings followed by special lunches, creating intimate gatherings cherished by all.
Her passion for her faith extended beyond her local community; she made many pilgrimages to Lourdes and Medjugorje, where her deep spiritual connection flourished. Ginny's faith was a guiding light in her life and provided comfort to those around her.
Among her most cherished accomplishments were her roles as a mother and grandmother. She took immense pride in her family, attending each of her grandchildren's games and meets with enthusiasm, always cheering them on.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Jane (Kevin) Day and Dr. Nannette (Pete Rightmire) Bernales, her sister Maria Luisa Abueg, along with her grandchildren—Mitchell, Bryce (Olivia), and Julia Day, Dr. Nicholas (Dr. Kelly), and Dr. Zachary (Lauren Benson) Rightmire—who were the light of her life. She also adored her great-grandchild, Benjamin Rightmire.
Virginia was preceded in death by her loving husband, Benjamin Bernales, (April 12, 2008), and her cherished grandchild, Amelia Day. She also mourned the loss of her brothers, James and John Light.
