Maryland Jean (Longwell) Walters, 92, of Florence, KY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026, surrounded by family at her residence at Colonial Gardens.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jim (Anne) Horner Jr., Kevin Horner, and Brian (Kellie) Horner; her grandchildren, Maggie, Mary, Michael, Karen, Joseph, Sam, and Natalie; along with many extended family members and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Mark, and her siblings, Donnie, Walter, Mary, Betty, Billy, Cubby, Mike, and Ina.
As the youngest of nine children, Jean was affectionately known as "Baby Jean." Even well into her 90s, friends from her hometown would still greet her with a smile and call her Baby Jean—a nickname she carried with pride throughout her life.
After graduating from Haverling High School in Bath, New York, Jean headed south to attend the University of Kentucky, where she earned a degree in Social Work. Soon after graduation, she married Jim Horner Sr., and together they raised four sons.
Jean had a quick wit, an infectious sense of humor, and an unwaveringly positive outlook on life. She filled her home with love, laughter, and encouragement, teaching her boys to find joy in everyday moments. To them, her meals of tuna macaroni salad, Hamburger Helper, meatloaf, and chili constituted fine dining in their Fort Mitchell dining room.
In addition to being a devoted mother, Jean worked as a social worker, substitute teacher, and dedicated countless hours to volunteering in her community. She believed in helping others and quietly made a difference wherever she served.
Later in life, Jean embraced new chapters, first moving to Florence and eventually becoming part of the caring community at Colonial Heights. There she formed lasting friendships, enjoyed many happy moments, and was surrounded by compassionate caregivers who brought comfort, dignity, and joy to her final years.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Blessed Sacrament Church, 2409 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, KY. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow in the church undercroft.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Colonial Heights Senior Living, Employee Fund, 6900 Hopeful Road, Florence, KY 41042, in appreciation of the extraordinary kindness and care shown to Jean. Her family will always be grateful for the love and compassion the staff shared with her.
