David Powell MacDonald, 79, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence, Kentucky. Born and raised in Ludlow, Kentucky, David graduated from Covington Catholic High School and spent his life doing what he loved most: building, creating, and pursuing new ideas.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon McGee MacDonald; his son, David MacDonald, daughter-in-law, Jenny MacDonald, and grandchildren David, Carina, and Emily; and his daughter, Natalie MacDonald, and daughter in law, Mary Martini.
David was the founder of Flamingo Air, which grew under his leadership into a recognized aviation company providing flight training, FAA aircraft dispatch training, and aircraft maintenance services. He took tremendous pride in helping people pursue careers in aviation and in building a business that earned respect throughout the industry.
Outside of aviation, David had a lifelong fascination with unexplained mysteries, space, and the possibility of life beyond Earth. His involvement with MUFON reflected the same curiosity and enthusiasm that he brought to every part of his life. He loved asking questions, exploring possibilities, and sharing ideas with anyone willing to listen.
David never met a stranger. He could start a conversation with anyone, find humor in difficult situations, and turn an ordinary discussion into an unforgettable story. He was an entrepreneur, an optimist, and a man who was always looking toward the next opportunity, project, or adventure.
He will be remembered for his curiosity, determination, sense of humor, and unwavering belief that anything worth doing was worth doing with enthusiasm.
An Open House to celebrate David's Life will be held Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM until the Words of Remembrance at 12:00 PM, all in Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, 316 Elm Street, Ludlow, Kentucky, 41016.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice in honor of David and his memory.
His family takes comfort in the many lives he touched, the business he built, the friendships he made, and the countless stories that will continue to be shared for years to come.
