Dale A. "Bear" Waite, 92, of Lakeside Park, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. A dedicated educator, coach, outstanding athlete, and community member leaving behind a legacy that will long be cherished by all who knew him. Born on December 11, 1933, in Covington, Kentucky, Dale devoted his life to shaping young minds and fostering talent on and off the football field.
Dale was an exceptional athlete and played varsity football, baseball, and basketball for Ludlow High School. His talents caught the attention of the legendary college football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant who recruited Dale to play for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. In addition to playing football for UK, he was also a starting pitcher for UK Baseball.
Upon graduating from University of Kentucky, Dale began his career as an educator and became head football coach for Dixie Heights High School. He then went on to teach and coach football in Cincinnati Public Schools for 31 years, where his passion for sports and education truly flourished. His commitment to excellence as a coach led to his recognition in 1993 as the winningest football coach in Cincinnati Public School history. His skill and dedication earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Ludlow High School Hall of Fame as well as the prestigious Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
Beyond the football field, Dale's impact on the community extended to the Ludlow-Bromley Swim Club, where he served as manager for over 35 years. Known in the Ludlow community with the nickname “Bear,” he became a Ludlow legend impacting the lives of hundreds of children, families, and employees.
He was also a member of the Lakeside Park Civic Club and Ludlow Vets. Dale is known not only for his leadership but also for his compassion and kindness, qualities that resonate in the hearts of those he mentored and connected with throughout his life.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy Waite of Lakeside Park; daughter, Diane (Greg) Dannenberg of Ft. Wright; son, Brian Waite of Lakeside Park; and his cherished granddaughter, Hannah Dannenberg of Ft. Wright.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Hannah Waite, and brothers, Robert and Buddy Waite.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 10:00 AM until the hour of Catholic Blessing at 12:00 PM all at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, 316 Elm Street, Ludlow, KY 41016.
Interment in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright, Kentucky.
